Mission Chilli Hills - Bring back the Bulgarian Carrot Chilli Pepper!
Ever since the creation of Chilli Hills, we have had a goal - to discover and select our native chili pepper and put it on the world chili map.
Our research over the years has shown that this pepper has always existed, but is more popular outside the country than here.
This was the reason why we changed the main goal of our mission. What we strive for is to bring it back and promote it in Bulgaria - where it belongs.
“Bulgarian Carrot” is the only Bulgarian hot pepper variety known outside the country. It is a variety with a rich history!
It originates from Bulgaria, where it is known as Rumanka, and during the Cold War in the 1980s it was brought across the Iron Curtain and cultivated as a hot pepper variety. What makes it different from all peppers grown in Bulgaria is that it has unchanging genetic parameters - color, size and most importantly, spiciness.
The name "Bulgarian Carrot" comes for obvious reasons - it originates from Bulgaria and resembles a carrot (in color and shape).
