Fresh chilies Scotch Bonnet Yellow by Chilli Hills
Family: Capsicum Chinense
Origin : Caribbean on the island of Jamaica
The Scotch Bonnet pepper is a variety of Habanero and is among the hottest peppers in the world. If you’ve ever tried a Habanero, you know it’s very hot. Scotch Bonnet is equally hot, or more accurately it reaches 100,000-350,000 SHU on the Scoville scale.
Scotch bonnet peppers are usually red or yellow in color. However, other varieties can ripen to orange, yellow, peach or even chocolate brown. They are very similar to Habanero.
The taste is fruity and slightly sweet with a hint of apple, cherry and tomato. To test the hotness and taste, try cutting off a piece and taste it and even chew it.
These hot peppers are usually used in pork and chicken dishes. Scotch Bonnet is primarily used in the traditional dishes of the Caribbean Islands, Grenada, Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyanese, Surinamese, Haitian and Caymanian cuisine.
However, remember to be careful with hot peppers. Wear gloves when cutting them to avoid spreading their capsaicin.
